Specifications To Make A 50 cm Steel Sieve

The below information is for the material required to make 3 (three) interlocking 50 centimetre steel sieves. I believe the hoops were made out of .8 mm or 1 mm gauge galvanized steel. Gill Steel cut and rolled the pieces and charged me at the time, $15 per pair. These costs may have risen, but they are considerably cheaper to purchase the parts than buy a single sieve. If you can still buy steel sieves, at the last count they were about $125.00 each. These work out to about $45 on average each, if you make 3.

I used standard steel pop rivets to hold the hoops together, using a sharp 1/8 drill bit. You will need at least one packet of standard shank pop rivets and one packet of  long shank pop rivets. I used a cross pane hammer to bend the mesh up and around the inner hoop to obtain a sharp bend in the mesh. The mesh then fitted snugly to its individual inside hoop. I then placed the outer hoop in position using a clamp. Once in correct position, I drilled from the centre back, pop riveting to the open end. In doing it this way the hoop closed by itself. I then had a tight fitting sieve, which held the mesh firmly in position. I have not included step by step instructions, as there would be pages of them, but you should get the general gist of how I made them. I will leave the fine detail to you, should you take on making one (or three) of these sieves. I have included three sizes of sieves, a 50 centimetre diameter sieve, a 40 centimetre diameter sieve and a 30 centimetre diameter sieve. I made the 50 centimetre sieve and it is still in use.
