 Accessing the Internet

Information for Students

You are required to log in using your UQ Sign-In username and password before accessing the Internet. You will have to do this each time you use a UQ computer, after which you will have full access to a faster, on-campus Internet.

UQ has also increased your FREE download quota to 400MB per month of commercial traffic. Best of all, you now have unlimited access to websites on AARNet and its affiliated networks (where a large proportion of your online research material is located).

But at the end of each session, PLEASE REMEMBER TO LOG OUT.

You should note that charges for downloads made using your password will be charged to your account. It is your responsibility to log out of your download quota at the end of each session. UQconnect will not be held responsible for the use of your password if you do not log off.

What is the AARNet network?

Australia 's Research and Education Network (AARNet) connects all Australian universities (except Bond, Southern Cross and Notre Dame) via a high bandwidth network. It has recently upgraded this network to provide Australian universities with some of the fastest Internet connections in the world.

You can download many popular programs and updates from the AARNet mirrors, without it counting against your download quota. To find out more visit the AARNet site or visit an ITS Service Centre.

Other information about your download quota...

The Internet connection upgrade also includes access to the on-campus wireless network and a FREE national dial-up number. Both of these connection methods require your UQ Sign-In username and password. Any downloads made via these connections will also count towards your download quota.

Specific courses may choose to give you additional download pools.  For information about these you must contact your course coordinator.

What if I run out of download quota before the end of the month?

If you exhaust your 400MB download for commercial traffic then you can purchase a one-off block of additional download from UQconnect.  There are a range of purchasing options available.  Please note that if you do exhaust your 400MB, you will still have unlimited access to sites on the AARnet3 and Internet2 network.

Your download quota does not accumulate from month-to-month.  At the start of each month you will always have 400MB in your download pool.

What is the Traffic Management system?

The University has developed software that will allow you to review and manage your download quota. You can access it through your web browser using your UQ Sign-In username and password at login.uq.edu.au or my.UQ. Please click the link below if you would like to find out more information about how to use the new system.
