Wireless Networking FAQ

To use the UQconnect Wireless Network on-campus, you will need to have the following:

  1. A laptop computer or PDA.
  2. A correctly installed Wireless LAN (WLAN) adapter that adheres to either the IEEE 802.11g or 802.11b standard.
  3. A current student or staff UQ Sign In Username and Password.

Wireless network adapters

We have gone to great lengths to ensure that almost ANY combination of operating system and wireless network adapter will work on the UQconnect Wireless Network, however due to the multitude of brands on the market, UQconnect can only officially support a limited number of them.

Below is a list of models that have been thoroughly tested and found not only to work exceptionally well, but also are simple to install and configure on a variety of devices:

  1. PCMCIA
    • Netgear WG511 and WG511T
    • Cisco Aironet 350 Series
    • Nortel eMobility
  2. USB
  3. Compact Flash
  4. SD Card
    • Sandisk WiFi cards
  5. Other
    • Apple Airport Card, which comes built-in to Apple's range of laptops

If you do not already own a WLAN card for your laptop, you may wish to purchase a Netgear card from the ITS Service Centre at St Lucia campus. Walk-through setup guides for recommended cards will be available shortly.
