Pocket PC 2003 with Built-in Wireless

Step 1

Check that the internal wireless adapter is correctly recognised by Windows.

The built-in wireless hardware will vary depending on what device you have, but normally you can determine this by selecting the ?Connections' icon from the "Settings\Connections" menu.

The example below shows the iPAQ WLAN Wireless Adapter on a HP H5550

Select the built-in wireless adapter (you may need to consult the documentation for your device for this information) and make sure it is set to connect to 'The Internet'.

Step 2

Before you continue, you may also need to enable the wireless hardware. Do this by looking for the ?Wireless' icon in the Start menu and enable the WLAN functionality by tapping the WLAN icon.

Close all the open windows, and begin setting up the UQconnect Wireless Network by selecting the ?Connections' icon from the "Settings\Connections" menu.

Step 3

You should now be at the first screen below. Click the 'Advanced' tab.

Step 4

Click the 'Select Networks' button in the Connections window.

Step 5

Click on the 'Edit...' button under "My Work Networks".

Step 6

Now select the 'Proxy Settings' Tab of the 'My Work Network' Settings page. The default settings are blank and look like this:

To create an entry, tick ?New'.

Step 7

You will be presented with a proxy configuration screen. Tick both check boxes and enter "http-proxy.uq.edu.au" in the Proxy server field. Click OK when done.

You can also close any other Settings windows now.

If you are in a UQconnect WiFi Zone, chances are that you will see it listed under 'Wireless Networks'. If so, select 'UQconnect' and confirm the settings below. If not, select 'Add New Settings...'

Under 'Network name', enter "UQconnect" (without the quotes) and in the 'Connects To' field, make sure to select 'The Internet'. Next, click the 'Authentication' tab.

This is what the Authentication page looks like by default.

Make sure 'The Key is provided for me automatically' option is unchecked and then uncheck 'Data Encryption (WEP Enabled)'.

Step 8

Click the 'OK' button and you're done. The next time you are within a UQconnect WiFi Zone, you should be able to access the UQconnect Wireless Network.

Your Pocket PC should now be configured to use UQconnect Wireless Network. It is important that you take a few minutes to read through the New Users Guide before continuing.
