Creating your web site

If you are new to web site design or would simply like to brush up your skills, take a trip to the W3Schools web site. You'll find a number of tutorials covering topics from basic HTML to advanced multimedia design that should get you up and running in no time.

Preparing files for transfer

The process of moving files from your local computer to the University server is known as 'uploading', and the documentation below will help you to complete this process.

Before you upload your files it is important to make sure they are correctly prepared. Please ensure:

  • you have created and correctly prepared your public_html directory. If you do not correctly prepare this directory other web users will not be able to view your site. Please click here for instructions;
  • all filenames are in lower case;
  • you have removed all spaces from filenames (or replaced them with dashes or underscores);
  • you have named your home page file 'index.html' (or index.htm);
  • you have placed all your web files in a single directory on your computer - ready for transfer by FTP.

Uploading your files

Once you have completed the above checklist you will be ready to transfer your files to the UQ server. There are a range of tools to help with this process and you'll find instructions for the more common of these below. (Note: unfortunately it is beyond the scope of this guide to provide instructions for all FTP programs/utilities. We have outlined procedures for some of the more popular methods below but you should not feel restricted to these alone. Please feel free to use any program or procedure you are comfortable with).
