What services are available on the network?

Most software that works on the wired network should also work across wireless with a few important exceptions. Clear text protocols such as non-encrypted E-mail (POP & IMAP), Telnet and FTP present a significant risk of disclosing UQ Sign In Usernames and Passwords on the wireless network.

Below is a list of common services that you cannot use on the wireless network along with an alternate method of connection.

Service Software affected Workaround
POP Email programs such as Outlook,
Outlook Express, Eudora etc.
Use my.UQ via a web browser
to access Central Mail (see note)
IMAP Email programs Use Secure IMAP (port 993)
Telnet Telnet clients Use SSH if available
FTP CuteFTP, Web browsers Use scp/sFTP or HTTP if available
