Chamomile has been a popular herb since Egyptian times. It was a traditional strewing herb, and was often used by Arabs in the form of an essential oil.

It is used as a herbal tea to settle nervous disorders, to stimulate the appetite, and to cleanse the blood. It is also made into herb beers and tisanes, hair rinses and eye lotions, as is used in the preparation of cosmetics and perfumes.

Chamomile seeds should be sown in spring, but they should not be covered as they require light to germinate. Chamomile grows well in fertile, well-drained soil, and should be watered well in dry weather.

1. Chamomile and Honey Mask

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers
¾ cup boiling water
2 tablespoons bran
1 teaspoon clear honey, warmed

Method:
Pour the boiling water over the chamomile flowers and allow to stand for 30 minutes. Strain the infusion and discard the flowers.

Mix 3 tablespoons of the liquid with the bran and honey. Rub this mixture over the face, avoiding sensitive areas around the eyes. Leave the mask on for 10  minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

2. Chamomile Conditioning Rinse

Ingredients:
½ cup chamomile flowers
2½ cups water
1 handful geranium leaves

Method:
Place the chamomile flowers and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes.

While the liquid is still hot, strain on to the geranium leaves and leave to soak for 30-40 minutes. Strain again, this time into a bottle. Use the rinse after shampooing.

3. Chamomile Tea

Ingredients:
2½ cups boiling water
1 tablespoon dried chamomile flower heads
castor sugar or honey (optional)

Method:
Put the chamomile flower heads into a teapot, or directly into a cup or mug. Pour on the boiling water and leave to infuse for 5 minutes. Strain the tea and, if desired, add a small amount of castor sugar or honey.
