 Accessing the Internet

Information for Students & Staff

Students

You are required to log in using your UQ Sign-In username and password before accessing the Internet. You will have to do this each time you use a UQ computer, after which you will have full access to a faster, on-campus Internet.

UQconnect provides you with a sizeable monthly download quota allowance on your free student internet account. Best of all, you have unlimited access to websites on AARNet and its affiliated networks (where a large proportion of your online research material is located). PLEASE REMEMBER TO LOG OUT at the end of each session.

You should note that charges for downloads made using your password will be charged to your account. It is your responsibility to log out of your download quota at the end of each session. UQconnect will not be held responsible for the use of your password if you do not log off.

Staff

You are required to log in using your UQ Sign-In username and password before accessing the Internet. You will generally have to do this once per day, after which you will have full access to a faster, on-campus Internet.

UQ staff are provided with unlimited download quota to all Internet sites.

What is the AARNet network?

AARNet Pty Ltd (APL) is the company that operates Australia's Academic and Research Network (AARNet). It is a not-for-profit company limited by shares. The shareholders are 38 Australian Universities and the CSIRO.

AARNet provides high-capacity leading-edge Internet services for the tertiary education and research sector communities and their research partners. AARNet serves over one million end users who access the network through local area networks at member institutions.

The network is built on a highly resilient backbone stretching from Brisbane to Perth with two geographically diverse POP sites in six Australian capital cities with new core routers fully installed. AARNet has achieved high speed access across Australia based on STM-64c (10Gbps) circuits from Nextgen Networks with high speed links to multiple "Tier One" Internet Providers in the USA and SXTransPORT, the joint initiative of AARNet and Southern Cross Cable Networks. Our Optical Regional Network is also providing substantial increases in capacity to Regional Australia.

You can download many popular programs and updates from the AARNet mirrors, without it counting against your download quota.

For further information, visit the AARNet site.
