Katie has introduced and organised the Skateaway courses for the past 7 years, as well as coaching competitive skaters. The courses have gained an outstanding reputation due the fact that both coaches have worked for many years with skaters of different standards from all over the world.

  • Katie says, 'The most important asset for an ice dance seminar is the destination. All ice rinks are the same, but if the ice rink is set in a beautiful city, ski town or picturesque village surrounded by mountains, the skaters dream of going back again and again’. She added. ‘A refreshing week of ice skating away from the regular strains of life with a group of people from all over the world with a like interest appears to revitalize our guests’.

  Getting Around:

Berchtesgaden is a town in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, near the border with Austria, some 23 km south of Salzburg and 158 km southeast of Munich. It is situated north of the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden.

By Train -- The Berchtesgaden Bahnhof lies on the Munich-Freilassing rail line. Twelve trains a day arrive from Munich (trip time: 1 1/2 hr.).

Berchtesgaden railway station is located in the centre of the town on the lower level near the main road and is served by rail from Munich's main railway station and bus from Salzburg railway station.

Trains run on different routes from Munich Airport and the journey takes approximately two-and-a-half to three hours. Take the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich Ost and then change onto a regional or Inter-City service. A further change at Freilassing is often necessary.

By Car -- Access by car is via the A8 autobahn from Munich in the north or Route 20 from the south. The drive from Munich takes about 2 hours.

The bus system in Berchtesgaden is as good as in the rest of Bavaria: buses run twice or once an hour and you can reach the outmost places with them. Be sure to get a timetable (”Busfahrplan“).

By Air: -- Berchtesgaden is far closer to Salzburg Airport in neighbouring Austria than to Munich or to Innsbruck airports.

International travellers wishing to visit Bavaria and Berchtesgaden should have no problems to book a flight to Munich, home to a large international airport.

  • Alternatively, if there is no direct flight to Munich with your airline, you could book a flight via Frankfurt and travel to Munich with the ICE high speed train.

  • Alternatively you can fly to Salzburg in Austria and travel then to Berchtesgaden via train (70 minutes) or bus (~40 minutes), both direct connections.

  • Crossing the German-Austrian border is no problem due to the Schengen Treaty.
  • Distance to Salzburg Airport: 20km

  • Distance to Munich Airport: 160km

  • Distance to Innsbruck Airport: 191km

Airport gifSalzburg Airport

Salzburg Airport, with a mix of ski charters and cheap scheduled flights, is the best option for visitors to Berchtesgaden and Schönau. The resorts are a short drive from the city or from the airport with a journey time of around 30 minutes.

Motorists should head out of Salzburg in a southerly direction and follow the signs for Marktschellenberg, Bischofswiesen and Berchtesgaden.

Airport gif Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck Airport is the furthest from Berchtesgaden and Schönau. Innsbruck has long been known as a popular destination for ski charter flights - especially from the northern European countries - but now the introduction of new lower-fare scheduled flights from major destinations like London has made it into a real option for those flying from further a field.

The principal route runs along the Inn Valley motorway to Wörgl and then cutting through resorts of Söll and St Johann into Germany at Unken. From there the drive to Berchtesgaden heads via Ramsau and would normally take from two to two-and-a-half hours.

Airport gifMunich Airport

Most visitors who are using scheduled flights will still probably arrive at Munich Airport, as it is the major international gateway for this part of Europe.

The expanding airport is located a good 30 minutes to the north-east of the city and drivers should stay on the motorway heading in the direction of Salzburg until the turn-off for Berchtesgaden is reached. The journey should take around one-and-a-half to two hours but the motorway can be very busy on a peak season Saturday.

      The Weather:

The winter climate in Berchtesgaden is usually from -9 ° C to 0° C
  • Snow conditions are consistently good until March.

  • There's skating between October and February at the world-class, indoor ice-skating rink.

  • Less reliable, but more picturesque, is skating on the surface of the Hintersee, once it's sufficiently frozen.

Banking:
  • The Euro is now the official currency of 12 EU member states (including Germany).
    1 Euro (€) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2, 1 and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

  • Currency exchange: Travellers cheques, cheques and foreign money can be changed at banks, railway stations and airports, and very often at major hotels (generally at a less convenient rate). Many banks offer differing exchange rates depending on the denominations of currency being bought or sold. Check with banks for details and current rates.
