Seeds for Change -
education program for people with eating issues
This ten-week program aims to offer the participants the opportunity to learn about and discuss issues that affect them, in a non-judgemental, supportive environment. The focus is on the group as a whole, but each member is encouraged and supported to participate to the level with which they are comfortable. Each session will use simple and enjoyable activities to promote discussion around the week's theme.  Each member will be provided with weekly handouts and a workbook. The group runs twice per year.  Sessions are conducted each Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The cost of the program is $100 ($10 per night) with a 50% discount for EDA members.

The next program will commence in early 2010.
For more information or to go on the waitlist, please call the Resource Centre on (07) 3394 3661.

Eating Disorder Recovery Support Group

The journey of recovery from an eating disorder can involve continued effort and attention. It doesn’t need to be a lonely journey – the saying goes “a journey shared is a journey halved”. If you would like to meet others who are prepared to share their stories of recovery then come along and join this new group. It is an informal group driven by what the participants want to do and is supported by group facilitators. This group runs for four consecutive weeks on Saturdays between 10am-12pm and there is no cost.

For upcoming starting dates and t
o register, please contact the Resource Centre on (07) 3394 3661.

Family Information Program
The Eating Disorders Resource Centre offers a four week information and support group specifically for families and friends of people with eating disorders. The group runs several times a year and each session deals with a topic specifically related to dealing with the effects of an eating disorder in the family, including such topics as "What can I do", "What about our other children?" and "Where to from here?". Guest speakers include therapists and professionals from different eating disorder treatment centres and services, parents who have been through the experience, and people who have recovered from their eating issue. We are currently taking registrations for 2010.

The group runs for four weeks on Tuesdays from 6.30 to 8.30pm
at Rosemount, Cartright St, Windsor.
To register, please call the Resource Centre on (07) 3394 3661.

Family Skills Training Program
This program is run in conjunction with the Family Information Program. It runs for six weeks and will follow the four week Family Information Program for those participants who would like to go on to learn specific skills for assisting their loved one on the road to recovery. The program is based on research by Professor Janet Treasure who has successfully introduced a motivational style of treatment to inpatient, day patient and out patient eating disorder settings. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a directive communication style that enables carers to help their loved one explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. It combines warmth and empathy with focused reflective listening and the skillful development of discrepancy. A core tenet of MI is that a person’s motivation to change is enhanced if there is a gentle process of negotiation in which they, rather than the carer, articulate the benefits and costs involved. Another principle of this approach is that conflict is unhelpful and that a collaborative relationship that works with, rather than against resistance, is essential for both parties to tackle the problem together.

The group runs for six weeks on Tuesdays from 6.30 to 8.30pm
at Rosemount, Cartright St, Windsor.
To register, please contact the Resource Centre on (07) 3394 3661.

The support groups held at the Eating Disorders Resource Centre are not therapeutic groups. We recommend that they should not be used as a substitute for counselling or therapy. As discussions in these groups may raise sensitive issues for individuals we highly recommend participants also seek external individual therapy. Please contact the centre if you would like a referral to an experienced therapist in your area.
