PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Kanokupolu is the name of a village in Hihifo district, which probably was Ngata's residence when he was still a governor. The title merged into the Kingdom of Tonga in the person of King George I on the 4th November 1875. MA'AFUO'LIMUOLA 1799 (22nd April 1799), died sp on or about 22nd April 1799, he was supported by the Haʻa Havea, a chiefly branch belonging to the dynasty of the Tuʻi Kanokupolu, but was murdered the same night by the Haʻa Ngata, another senior chiefly branch, who had supported Finau Tukuʻaho.

TUPOU MALOHI 1808/1812, he was appointed only after the quarreling chiefs put their differences aside to forestall the ambitions of Tupoutoʻa, but he was weak, and unable to prevent the chiefs from fighting each other, he resigned shortly afterwards, and went to Haʻapai, though he retained the title in name only; married (as her second husband) Latuniua, daughter of Kahomovailahi, 3rd Tuita, and his wife, Latufu'ipeka, and had issue. He died 1812.

TUPOUTO'A 1812/1820, he proclaimed himself to be the Tuʻi Kanokupolu, however, he was not officially recognised by the Haʻa Ngata or the Haʻa Havea; married 1stly, Taufahoamofaleono, born about 1786, died about 1862, daughter of Maluotaufa, 4th Ma'afutuku'iaulahi of Vaini (see above), married 2ndly, Tupou'ahome'e, daughter of Tupoulahisi'i, 10th Tu'i Kanokupulu (see above), and his wife, Latufu'ipeka, and had issue. He died 1820.

'ALEAMOTU'A TUPOU I'FALETUIPAPAI 1827/1845, he was already an old man when appointed in 1827, and not interested in war and politics, he was only granted the title to delay Taufa'ahaus claim; he was baptized 10th January 1830 with the name of Siosaia Tupou; married (a), Hon. Mele Moala, daughter of Soakai from Felemea, by his wife, from the 'Akau'ola family of Taunga, married (b), Moe'iaipangai Puakahuhua, daughter of Ngata, son of Ata Puakahuhua, and had issue. He died 18th November 1845 and is buried in Fale Tuipapai, the old part of Mala'e 'Aloa in Kolomotu'a, Tonga. 
    • Hon. Ratu 'ENELE MA'AFU'OTU'ITOGAHon. Ratu 'Enele Ma'afu'otu'itonga [Henry Ma'afu] (by Mele Moala), born 1816, 1st Tu'i Lau 1848/1881, 2nd Chieftain Supreme of the Confederation of Lau (see Fiji) 1869/1871, he established himself at Lakeba as leader of the Tongan community in the Lau Islands in 1848 and from there conquered the Moala Islands and after defeating the Tui Macuata, he extended his influence through the northern island of Vanua Levu, and by 1858 he became the most powerful chief in northern Fiji; he later took control of the Lau archipelago, and was granted the title of Tui Lau, or King of Lau, Levuka, and Ovalau in a meeting of Lauan chiefs in Lakeba in February 1869, he was subsequently recognized as such by the chiefs of Cakaudrove and Bua in May 1869, but abdicated in favour of Ratu Cakobau and the united Fijian monarchy in 1871; married Hon. 'Elenoa Ngataialupe Lutui (see Fakatulolo), and had issue, as well as further issue by Longo, daughter of Tupouleva, Chief of Folaha in Tongatapu. He died 6th February 1881 in Lomaloma, Fiji, and is buried in the Lau Island group, Fiji.
      • 'Anaseini Lu'isa Mafile'o (by Longo), married Viliami Fakatoumafi'eva'ipomana, son of Moeakiola, and his wife, Tupou Fe'ao, daughter of Hon. Hivapea'ulu Vaea of Houma, Vaea, and had issue, one son and six daughters.

He died in Samoa and is buried on the outskirts of Apia, Samoa.

  4. Hon. SIAOSI TUPOU (later HM King George Tupou I), 19th Tu'i Kanokupulu [4.12.1845] -[18.2.1893], he declared himself king of Tonga on 20th November 1839 at Pouono in Vava'u; he had also wanted the title of Tu'i Kanokupulu much earlier, but like his father, he was considered by the high chiefs of too low a rank to be a serious contender, but by 1845 he had conquered the whole of Tonga, and he was then strong enough to take the Tuʻi Kanokupolu title; it merged in 1865 with Tu'i Tonga title to eventually form the Kingdom of Tonga in 1875 when he proclaimed the constitution and abolished all old chiefly titles, except for 33, who were elevated to noble status.
