PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Chiefs of Niuatoputapu. The estates belonging to this family are, Vaipoa and Hihifo but not to include Falehau and Matavai and Tafahi; and in Niuatoputapu, Vaotahi, Hunganga, Tavili and the waste land between Hunganga and Tavili. Title became vacant after the death of Maafu'otu'itonga in 1934, but it was recreated for the younger son of HM King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV in 1979. Title holders were...

PUAKATEFISI, 4th Latumailangi, 1st Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu, son of Fonomanu, 2nd Tu'i Lakepa, and 'Ekutongapipiki, 4th Tu'i Tonga Fefine, probably a great grandson of the first Latu; he swapped his title of Latu, with the Lavelua of 'Uvea for the 'Uvean title of Utuma'atu; married a daughter of High Chief Fuimaono of Faleali'i in Samoa, and had issue.

    • Tupamofeolo Tupaolelangi (identical with the next brother?), married and had issue.
      • Vika Siulolovao Tupaolelangi (1803-1890), married Sakapapa Fusitu'a, Tupaolelangi, and had issue (see Fusitu'a).
    • (name unknown), Fuimaono (a matapule title in Niu'), married 1stly, Kaloafutonga, married 2ndly, Numia from Manono Island, Samoa, and had issue.

  2. PUNGAKAITAFOLA, 2nd Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu, he married Fakaositahole, a commoner, and therefore abdicated in favour of his brother, and had issue, as well as adoptive issue.

  3. PUAKAILAKELO, 3rd Ma'atu, 5th Latumailangi, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu, married Siulolovao, daughter of Tui of Niu'afo'ou, and his wife, Valamotu (daughter of 'Alofi, 1st Fotofili), and had issue. [OR married Siulovolovo, daughter of Fotofili, 7th Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, and his wife, Valamotu]

  4. KULIHA'APAI, 4th Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu; married, Kavafutuna (married 2ndly, about 1828, Moimoi'angaha, 7th Nuku and 5th Ma'afutuku'iaulahi), daughter of Fatafehi Fuanunu'iava, 38th Tu'i Tonga, and his wife, Tupoufalemei, and had issue. He died about 1820.

  5. IKAMAFANA [Nima], 5th Ma'atu, 6th Latumailangi, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu, married Latutama, sixth daughter of Maealiuakimu'a, 8th Tu'i Kanokupulu, and had issue. He died in Fiji when his canoe drifted.

  6. MO'ENGANGONGO [Ngongo Sefanaia], 6th Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu; he was baptised a Christian, taking the name of Sefanaia; he tried to convert the people of 'Uvea, but was killed by the Lavelua's men; married 2ndly, Hon. Tonga Haʻapai, daughter of Sisitoutai (see Tokemoana), and his wife, Puakatefisi, and had issue. He died 183x in 'Uvea.

    • Kongaikamafana Latumailangi, married Valamotu Pita, daughter of Pita Maea, and his wife, Mohokoi, and had issue.
      • Sioeli 'Akaupou Latumailangi, born about 1874, married Kalolaine Lata'ifalefehi 'Ahome'e, born 3rd August 1876, died 1917, daughter of Hon. Taniela 'Otukolo ʻAhomeʻe (see 'Ahome'e), and his wife, Hon. Siulolovao Vaea, and had issue.

        • Fataimoemanu Latumailangi, born 1908, married 3rd October 1931, Pinomi Fonua (see Tu'i Ha'angana).
        • 'Ofa Kiuvea Latumailangi, born 17th March 1910, married 27th September 1930, Feliha'a Tutoe Kailahi Tu'ifua (see Fotofili), and had issue. She died 16th October 1936.

  7. Hon. MAFOA'AELANGI, 7th Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu; he was an early convert to Christianity in Ha'apai, but relapsed on his first return to Niu; he hosted a visit to Niu' of Reverend Waterhouse, after whom he named his eldest son; married 2ndly, Pulimaipau'u, daughter of Sisitoutai, 4th Tokemoana, and his principal wife, Fatafehi Fanga'afa, Fatafehi Fuanunu'iava, 38th Tu'i Tonga, and his secondary wife, Popua, daughter of Finau 'Ulukalala I, and his wife Adi Vutulongo, and had issue.

  8. Hon. 'UATAHAUSI LATUMAILANGI, 8th Ma'atu, High Chief of Niu'atoputapu; he ruled Niu' as an independent king till 4th June 1867 when he ceded Niu' and Tafahi to HM King George Tupou I, at the Constitutional Convention or Fono in Nuku'alofa; he was then appointed a hereditary noble of Tonga; married Hon. Fatai, daughter of Fotofili of Niuofo'ou, and had issue. He died 1872.

  9. Hon. SIOELI KIVALU [Hon. Ma'atu], 9th Ma'atu 1877/1894, married 2nd March 1875, Hon. Siosi'ana Tae Manusa, died 5th July 1931, daughter of Hon. Penisimani Latuselu, and his wife, Hon. 'Ilaisaane Tupou'ahau, and had issue. He died 14th May 1894.

  10. Hon. SIONE PANUVE [Hon. Ma'atu], 10th Ma'atu 1894/1923; married 18th July 1911, Hon. Fusipala'opangai Veikune, born 10th May 1890 in Nuku'alofa, daughter of Hon. Siosateki Tonga, 2nd Veikune, and his second wife, Hon. 'Ane Manakoikafo'ou Vahai'i, married (a), 'Ilaisaane Manu Sika, born 7th July 1873, died 12th December 1918, daughter of 'Aisake Ta'ea'onga Sika, and his wife, 'Amelia Toloa, married (b), Mele Siulolovao, married (c), Pauline Kaufataua, married (d), Fusi Veikune, married (e), Mele Latu, and had issue. He died spl 22nd June 1923.
    • Tevita Tautahi Mapa Ma'atu (by 'Ilaisaane), born 5th December 1895 in Hihifo, married Sela Tupou Lavaki, born 23rd September 1900, died 19th August 1978, daughter of Tevita Latu Lavaki, and his wife, Mele 'Ana Kaufusi, and had issue. He died 15th January 1945 in Nuku'alofa.

      • Dr. Penisimani Latuselu Mapa, born 5th June 1924, married 8th July 1948 in Nuku'alofa, 'Ilaisaane Tu'avava'u Mataele, born 19th January 1929, died November 1995, daughter of Siosaia Maile Mataele, and his wife, Halaevalu Fonongava'inga Sipukako, and had issue. He died 9th May 1982 in Oahu, Hawai'i.

  11. Hon. VILIAMI MAAFU'OTU'ITONGA [Hon. Ma'atu], 11th Ma'atu [22.6.1923] - [12.10.1934], died sp 12th October 1934 (#1 p.312), buried Loamanu.

  13. Hon. Ma'atu Fatafehi Alaivahamama'o Tuku'aho, 12th Ma'atu [27.9.1979] - [18.2.2004], born 17th December 1954 at the Royal Palace in Nuku'alofa, second son of HM King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga, and his wife, HM Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho, educated at Tupou College in Tonga, the Leys School in Cambridge, U.K. and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He was a Commissioned Midshipman RN in 1975. He held the hereditary title of Noble Ma'atu of Niuafo'ou and Niuatoputapu, bestowed on him by the King on 27th September 1979, he was removed from the roll of succession to the Tongan throne in order to marry his first wife, served three years as a Member of Parliament, representing the Nobles of Niuafo'ou and Niuatoputapu in Tonga's Legislative Assembly, married 1stly, 21st July 1980, Seiloni Heimata'ula Kaho Anderson, born 12th February 1957, died 19th September 1985, daughter of singer Hon. Tu'imala Kaho and a Tahitian High Chief, Matagialalua Tavana Salmon Anderson, died sp 1985, married 2ndly, 1989, Alaileula Poutasi Jungblut of Samoa, now styled the Hon. Alaileula Tuku'aho, daughter of Melvin John Jungblut II, and his wife, To'oa Tosi Malietoa, daughter of HH Susuga Malietoa Tanumafili II of Samoa, and has issue (by 2nd wife). He died 18th February 2004 in Nuku'alofa.
