PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The Tu'i Tonga is a line of Tongan kings, which originated in the 10th century with the mythical 'Aho'eitu, son of the God, Tangaloa, and a mortal woman, 'Ilaheva; it withdrew from political power in the 15th century by establishing the Tu'i Ha'atakalaua line; and in the reign of Tu'ipulotu I, further lost power to the Tu'i Kanokupulu. The 39th Tu'i Tonga tried to win back some political power in battle with Taufa'ahau, but was defeated in 1826, and the Tu' Tonga title died out with him in 1865. Title holders were...

KAU'ULUFONUA I [Ka'ulufonuafekai I Fasi'atele] fl.1470, he pursued his father's murderers from Tongatapu in Tonga to Niue, Fiji, Samoa, before finally apprehending them at their home island of either 'Uvea or Futuna, and then killed and ate them, for which he was nicknamed 'fekai'; married and had issue.

Salote Lupepau'u, born about 1811, died 8th September 1889, daughter of Makamalohi, and his wife, Halaevalu Moheofo, married 2ndly, Latuniua, daughter of Kahomovailahi, 3rd Tuita, and his wife, Latufu'ipeka, married 3rdly, about 1827, Luseane Halaevalu Mata'aho, Moheofo, died after 1853, daughter of Tupouto'a, 17th Tu'i Kanokupulu, and his wife, Tupou'ahome'e, married 4thly, Si'ulolovao Sisi Toutaitokotaha (see Tokemoana), married 5thly, Fala'oetau, (married 2ndly, Fa'e Lavaka), daughter of Tupoumonukunuku, and his wife, Ngingie, married 6thly, Mohulamu Fili'aunifo, married 7thly, Popuamoleva, married 8thly, Sovaki, daughter of Talanoa, son of Mumui, 13th Tu'i Kanokupulu, married 9thly, Latu Fakahaukelesi Tapapala, daughter of Tu'ihalafatai, married 10thly, Manu, married 11th, Fusipala Kilistina, daughter of Tali'uli Malohi, Falekaono, and his wife, Fusipala Papalangi, married 12th, Mafikakau, daughter of Fakafanua, married 13th, Nauvale, married 14th, Mafi Vika Tupouneiafu, married 15th, Va'e, married 16th, Taka, married 17th, Mo'unga'ulufeholoi'olotopoha, daughter of Moimoi'angaha, 7th Nuku and 5th Ma'afu Tuku'iaulahi, and his wife, Kavafutuna, married 18th, Lahauku, and had issue, 24 children. He died 9th December 1865 (#1 p.312).

    • Hon. Lavinia Veiongo Mahanga (by Luseane Halaevalu Mata'aho), born 10th November 1828, married 1stly, Hon. 'Isileli Tupou, son of HM King George I Tupou, and his secondary wife, Pasikole, died vp at sea about 1892, married 2ndly, Hon. 'Inoke Fotu Veikune, died 1899, and had issue (see Tupou and Veikune). She died 7th April 1907.
