Single of the Week

GRANT LEE BUFFALO - Mockingbirds

There aren't many songs that you can jump around the house while doing the cleaning to, polish off the JD and get drunk to and bonk to but Mockingbirds is certainly such a track, and with five songs (inlcuding the brilliant Dixie Drug Store) on the single you could probably do the lot in one play. Grant Lee Phillips possesses a voice of rare quality and tone, like Lou Reed and David Bowie on Transformer, but he has it all; the dry, deep vocal and the soaring falsetto. Sparse, bluesy, evocative and at times sligtly unhinged, this three piece arrange their songs like no one else. The perfect soundtrack to a David Lynch thriller? What a sublime gig January 22 will be: REM, Died Pretty and the glorious GLB.
