Grant Lee Phillips on R.E.M. from Q Magazine, January 1996

"We saw a big chunk of the planet with those guys, including Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and America. My impressions are vivid and numerous. Our own part of the excursion began at Perth where the Bucks were wedded in January. Crystal Myth/aka Grant Lee Buffalo provided a tragic repertoire of wedding favorites for the newlyweds and their guests. I've never drunk more blue drinks or danced on more tables than those nights we spent with R.E.M. in Australia.

Tokyo is Times Square times 2,000. R.E.M. did Crush With Eyeliner for Top of the Pops at the Budokan. They had the foxiest kids from Fokima Heights go-go dancin' on pedestals while Grant Lee Buffalo mamboed in bear suits.

In between Japan and Europe most of us had come down with some form of influenza, jet lag, hangover, head cold or homesickness. One morning Michael knocked at my door and brought me spirulina (algae-derived organic elixir). Spirulina and perfect health.

At Lausanne, Bill collapsed mid-performance. Everyone was stunned, concerned and scared while trying real hard to be optimistic. By the time we got the news, we were already in Zurich, the next date on the itinerary. Fortunately, Switzerland possesses the best when it comes to this type of surgery. The next time we saw Bill he was driving that pick-up of his around Athens."
